What Are the Sources of Carbon Tetrachloride?

Modified on: Mon, 21 Jul, 2025 at 9:29 AM

Carbon Tetrachloride has been typically associated with the production of refrigerants and propellants for aerosol cans.  As a solvent for resins, rubber waxes, varnishes, lacquers, fats and oils.  It is also commonly used as a dry cleaning agent and historically as a grain fumigant.  It has also been used historically for fire suppression.

Exposure may include but not limited to:

- Accidental release from production and other uses

- Evaporation or leaching from its disposal in landfill

- Building materials and cleaning products

Carbon Tetrachloride is typically included in the standard Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by GC/MS scan.
