My water smells, what should I test for?

Modified on: Wed, 23 Jul, 2025 at 12:18 PM

Water sources can develop an odour due to a number of reasons.:

  • A chlorine smell could be due to an incomplete chlorination treatment.
  • Organic matter and pesticides can be potential causes of a musty smell.
  • The “rotten egg” smell is typically confirmed with high sulfide levels.
  • A fuel or solvent smell can also indicate contamination of your water source.

We have a number of individual tests and packages that can assist with determining the potential cause. You can reach out to us at customersolutionswest@bureauveritas.com.
